New Student Program
One way to get involved
in the Student Association (SA), specifically in your first year at Rice, is to
become involved in the New Student Program. Each residential college has two
voting members in the Student Senate: the college president and the college
senator. Each fall, every college's Senator reviews applications at their
college in the fall for the New Student Program. From these applicants both new
members to serve on committees and NSRs (New Student Representatives) for the
Best Practices project will be chosen.
While members of the New
Student Program do not vote in the Student Senate, they are integral parts of
the SA. They work closely with other NSRs, Senators, and Presidents on projects
throughout the year, as well as promote the SA at their college. The New
Student Program is designed to integrate new students into the SA structure and
provide them projects. These projects will provide interactions that help build
a skill set and network that will allow new students to positively impact the
Rice University campus either through the Student Association or through other
avenues available on campus.
Best Practices NSRs
The term of a Best
Practices NSR consists of the following main components: SA meeting attendance,
Best Practices project (in the fall), and College-Focused project (in the
spring). The Best Practices project in the fall consists of a team of NSRs that
work on identifying best practices at the colleges and compiling a report to
share with the SA, Presidents, and Masters. Finally, the College-Focused
project will involve the NSRs working with their college team (3 NSRs, College
Senator, and College President) to implement a best practice or other action
item that they see would most benefit their college. These components will
enable NSRs to interact with their college, network across campus, work in
teams, and implement new ideas that can improve campus life.
New Student Committee
members
Select new students will
be a member of one of the three committees and serve as an active member,
participating in projects throughout the year. The term of a New Student
Committee member consists of the following main components: SA meeting
attendance, committee meeting attendance, and committee project(s) completion.
New student committee members are expected to be active members of one or more
committees, while actively serving as leaders or supporting members on one of
the committee’s projects, or a personal project developed for a committee.
The goals of the New
Student Program is to help new students:
● Become engaged members
of the SA
● Learn about other
colleges
● Interact with upper
classmen
● Build confidence and
skills in networking and communicating with peers and administrators
● Learn to
coordinate campus wide communication and initiatives
● Contribute to
enhancing quality of life at Rice
