SA Minutes: 03-17-08

The weekly meeting of the Student Association was called to order on Monday, March 17, 2008 at 10:06 PM in Farnsworth Pavilion in the Rice Memorial Center. Laura Kelley, President, presided and Cristina Garcia-Abedrabbo, Secretary, was present. The Baker College Senator was absent.

The minutes from the March 10 meeting were approved.

Kelley presented a campus map displaying the locations were new bike racks have been or will be installed. Kelley announced SA changeover will take place in Willy’s Pub immediately after next Monday’s meeting. Free cider and pizza will be provided. Kelley also announced voting for the SA Mentor Award will be held in a closed session after tonight’s meeting.

Nick Muscara, incoming EVP, gave an update on the upcoming “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” event. Muscara said the initial plan was to hold the event on Saturday, April 12 at noon. Serveries would be closed and each college would hold their individual bar-BQ. However, the scheduled date and time conflicted with some colleges’ already planned activities. Muscara asked presidents and senators if they would consider moving the event to Friday, April 11 at 6:30 PM. The event would take place during a night game and serveries would be closed for dinner. Muscara requested senators and presidents to ask their individual colleges if they would prefer the suggested option instead of the initial plan.

Muscara also announced planning for the 2008 Family Weekend has already begun. He said 2 or 3 individuals are needed from each college to form part of the steering committee. This committee is to be established within the next two weeks; interested students should contact him as soon as possible. Matt Youn, IVP, announced members of the Board of Trustees will be coming to Rice next week for lunch. They are interested in having lunch with students at the different college serveries on Wednesday, March 26 from 11:30 to 1:00 PM. Students who wish and are able to escort them to the serveries should contact Youn.

Jen Zhan, Student Life committee Chair, and Kyle Clark, Will Rice Senator, gave an update on the committee’s projects. On Saturday, March 29 the committee will be volunteering in Outreach Day at the Humane Society from 1:00-3:30 PM. Students interested in volunteering can sign up by contacting Zhan. They also announced they have been working with RUPD to plan a study break on Thursday, March 27 in the Grand Hall. During the study break, RUPD will be addressing students on issues concerning safety on campus and preventive measures to stop crime. Zhan and Clark also said they have met with the Fondren Library staff and brought up the idea of holding a study break during the October month. The study break’s purpose is to inform new students, as well as returning students, on all the resources available at Fondren for doing research. They also said next semester students will be able to instant message librarians throughout the course of the day. Also, starting next fall new computers will be available at Fondren. The committee members also polled the senate on whether or not they believe the library hours should be extended on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information contact Jen Zhan at jwz1@rice.edu.

The Senate approved the Spring Election ballot. Andrew Bowen, Director of Elections, announced voting for the Spring 2008 elections will begin tonight at 11:59 PM. Vote at sa.rice.edu.

Kelley introduced the Commencement Memo to be sent to the President’s office. Seeing that this year’s commencement website was updated really late, the memo insists the President’s office to update the commencement website the first week of the spring semester. Approval of the memo will be done next week.

Christopher Warrington, Parliamentarian, introduced the proposed by-law amendment “To Create the Committee on Constitutional Revisions.” The amendment will be voted during next week’s meeting.

The proposed by-law amendment to update the duties of the Senators was approved through a roll call vote.

The meeting adjourned at 11:40 PM.

A closed meeting was held by the voting members of the Senate to vote on the recipient of the SA Mentor Award.
