Trevor Tobey (President)
Hello, my name is Trevor Tobey. I’m a rising junior from Hanszen studying Economics and Sport
Management, and I’m excited to run for Student Association President! The Student
Association, with a budget of over $400,000 and leverage as student leaders, could significantly
improve your Rice experience. However, the results show our Student Association’s consistent
failure to do so. To change the decisions being made, we must change the decision-makers. I
will lead this change by prioritizing responsible spending, efficient governance, and inclusivity.
Financial Responsibility is critical. The SA spends $100,000 annually on countless yearbooks
that often lie around campus unused, while clubs and events are struggling to get the funds
necessary to operate. I’m determined to maximize our resources by crafting a fair budget,
investing in students, opposing tuition hikes, and enhancing budgetary transparency.
Operational Efficiency is crucial. We cannot continue to use hollow resolutions and weak
statements as excuses for action. I will put our money where our mouth is to make genuine
progress for students. Taking ownership of the SA’s problems, pursuing actionable solutions,
and seeking out student voices are my strategies for impactful change.
Inclusive Engagement is essential. Our student association has failed to cultivate an
environment where all voices feel safe to contribute. I will welcome all people in the Student
Association, replace groupthink with robust dialogue, and increase avenues for you to
Participate.
