Secretary Candidate: Cedric Lau
Civic Duty Rice President Candidate: Sammi Frey
Hello! My name is Cedric Lau, and I’m running for Student Association secretary. I am a freshman at Duncan studying Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and I’m running for secretary because the SA needs to improve how it engages and communicates with the student body.
After seeing the low turnout at this year’s General Election, it is clear that the SA has to rethink how it interacts with the community and take meaningful steps to rebuild its trust and connection with students.
I know firsthand that when students unite behind a cause, real important change can happen. As class president in high school, I successfully advocated for free, unlimited therapy sessions for students and implemented late start days by bringing people together. Now, I want to see us get the things we want and need.
As SA Secretary, I will:
Champion 100% transparency between the SA and the student body.
You deserve to know why we don’t have 24-hour Fondy yet and what challenges the SA is facing to make Rice better for you. You should know how the SA is using its time and budget.
Create an environment where you feel comfortable coming to us by coming to you first.
The SA should be accessible, approachable, and visible. I am committed to listening to you.
Prioritize communication and engagement without compromise.
Think optional newsletters with SA happenings, stronger collaborations with college governments, and more direct ways to engage with your representatives.
Thank you for your support. Let’s see it through!
Sammi Frey has been a member of Civic Duty Rice since her freshman year, and she is dedicated to spending the rest of her life in public service. Some idea she has for CDR next year are monthly trips to volunteer at the animal shelter, clean-the-creeks, and more local ways to inspire students to become civically engaged. She wants to work on voter registration across campus, targeting several low-turnout groups such as student athletes and off-campus students.
