Candidate Statement

Max Menchaca (President)

Hello Rice!

My name is Max Menchaca, and I am running for Student Association President because I believe Rice’s representative government should feel inclusive, relevant, and something students are proud of. I first became involved in student government as a freshman representative for Brown College, where I developed a deep appreciation for the people who work behind the scenes to make the Rice experience special. This year, as Brown’s Student Association Senator, I have seen the real progress the SA can make, but I have also seen the disconnect many students feel from it. I have co-authored legislation to support undocumented students and to limit members of the Student Association from making political statements on behalf of the SA, and I authored a unanimously passed bill urging Local Foods to end its restricted seating practice. Beyond the SA, I have served on both Magister and RA selection committees that require thoughtful and collaborative decision-making, and I have planned large-scale college events (such as a new college tradition at Brown, Brown goes camping, and various FitQs). If elected, my priorities will be pushing back on institutional barriers that burden student life (publics, college night, etc), advancing academic improvements (such as publishing final exam schedules earlier), and ensuring students feel informed and represented by their government. I hope you’ll consider supporting me so we can build a Student Association that works for all Rice students :)
