Candidate Statement
Jenny Karsner (President)
Picture this: middle of junior year OC, exams looming, and Houston wakes you up to another tropical storm. You weigh your options: bike in the rain juggling an umbrella, or stay in bed and miss class. This shouldn’t be the choice. That’s why I want to create a Rainy Day Fund to help students arrive on campus safely and dry.
Hi, I’m Jenny, and I’m running to be your Student Association President.
I’m a junior studying Mechanical Engineering, a proud Swede who’s lived coast to coast from DC to SF. I’m a people person at heart and have led across campus as a two-time Civic Immersion leader (including designing a late-departure program), Engineering ASME Junior Representative, Wiess IM Sports Representative and Team Captain (yeah soccer!), Pub Bartender, and University-Court Representative, giving me experience with SJP process and collaborative decision making.
These roles shape my priorities: connecting Rice students to Houston through nonprofit partnerships and student discounts; strengthening Jack culture through inter-college competitions, and athlete-NARP connections; and advocating for practical improvements like expanded late-night dining, meal plan updates, and a Fondy nap room. I also care deeply about supporting Chao College and exploring ideas like a Rice-supported gap year and J-Term.
I’ve recently loved teaching my survival college class, but we’re not in the woods, we’re at Rice. Let’s not just survive. Let’s drive, not only to school financially supported and dry, but toward a future with you at the core. I listen. I lead. Let me be your voice. Jenny4Prez.
